In search of healthier SnickersNews brief compiled from ProQuest Information and Learning CompanyMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, February 13, 2006 Without your knowing it, Masterfoods USA -- maker of such beloved candy favorites as Snickers, Mars bars, M & M's and Dove bars -- has been working to make its chocolate healthy. Research in recent decades has discovered cocoa beans to be rich in flavenols, a category of nutrient also found in blueberries, green tea, red grapes and other foods, and known for its benefits to cardiovascular health. For that reason, Masterfoods masterminded, so to speak, a patented new method for processing the cocoa beans that keeps the flavenols intact, from bean all the way to chocolate bar. Much research is still needed before any claims of health benefits can go on a Snickers bar, said Robyn Flipse, a registered dietitian and consultant to Masterfoods. And because the typical chocolate bar is still high in fat and sugar, overindulgence in the name of health is not advised.
